Al Hirt was a New Orleans trumpeter known for his big, brassy sound and popular appeal, blending traditional Dixieland jazz with light orchestral arrangements. Cotton Candy came out in 1964 on RCA Victor and features the title track, which became a hit single and won a Grammy for Best Performance by an Orchestra or Instrumentalist with Orchestra. The album sits in that easy-listening jazz territory that Hirt occupied throughout the mid-sixties, accessible and polished rather than strictly traditional.
