Al Stewart is a Scottish singer-songwriter who had been recording since the late 1960s before breaking through commercially with this 1976 album. Year Of The Cat blends polished pop rock with Stewart's trademark literary, history-tinged lyrics and acoustic guitar work, backed by lush orchestration and jazz-inflected arrangements. The title track became a substantial hit, and "On the Border" also received significant radio play.
