Here's a fascinating piece of Cold War-era musical satire that represents Allan Sherman at his most ambitious. "Peter And The Commissar" takes Prokofiev's beloved "Peter and the Wolf" and transforms it into a biting political commentary, with the wolf reimagined as a Soviet commissar in this clever parody. Sherman, riding high on the success of his "Camp Granada" novelty hits, convinced RCA to let him work with the prestigious Boston Pops Orchestra under Arthur Fiedler's baton – a remarkable coup that brought legitimacy to what could have been dismissed as mere novelty fare.
