Here's a refined classical recording that deserves more attention from serious collectors of chamber music. The Kavafian sisters, both distinguished concert violinists who built their careers performing with major orchestras and in prestigious venues worldwide, joined forces with pianist Jonathan Feldman for this thoughtfully curated program. Annie and Ida Kavafian were already well-established artists by 1986, with Annie having served as concertmaster of several major ensembles and Ida building a reputation as both a soloist and chamber musician. Their collaboration here showcases the intimate musical connection that can only come from years of performing together.

This Nonesuch Digital pressing captures an interesting moment in classical recording history, as the label was pioneering digital recording techniques for chamber music in the mid-1980s. The program itself is intelligently designed, pairing Mozart's substantial Duo in G major K. 423 with Moszkowski's charming Suite for two violins and piano, and concluding with Sarasate's fiery Navarra. While Nonesuch was better known for their world music and contemporary classical releases, their occasional forays into standard repertoire like this often yielded surprisingly compelling results. The engineering here serves the intimate scale of the music well, and collectors of violin repertoire will appreciate having these three works performed by artists who clearly understand both the technical demands and musical subtleties involved.
