Bell & James were an R&B duo consisting of Leroy Bell and Casey James, both of whom had previously worked as songwriters for artists like the O'Jays. "Only Make Believe" is their second album, released in 1979 on A&M Records, sitting comfortably in the smooth funk and disco-inflected soul sound of the late 1970s. The duo had a modest hit with "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)," which got some radio play during the disco era.
