Billy Joel's 1983 album "An Innocent Man" is a deliberate homage to the early rock and roll and soul music of his youth, drawing heavily from doo-wop, rhythm and blues, and early Motown influences. The album produced several well-known singles including "Uptown Girl," a nod to Four Seasons-style pop, and the title track, which echoes the sounds of Ben E. King and early soul balladry. It also features "Tell Her About It" and "The Longest Time," the latter being an a cappella doo-wop piece that became one of his signature songs.
