Billy Joel's eighth studio album, released in 1982 on Columbia Records, marked a notable shift toward a more introspective and sonically ambitious direction, drawing heavy influence from The Beatles and addressing themes of Vietnam veterans, unemployment, and disillusionment. The record features "Allentown," a bleak portrait of the decline of American industry, and "Goodnight Saigon," a somber tribute to Vietnam veterans that became one of Joel's most recognized compositions. Produced by Phil Ramone, the album leans more toward dense, layered arrangements than the piano-driven pop rock of his earlier work.
