Description

The Great White North was recorded in 1981 following the popularity of Bob & Doug McKenzie, characters created by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas for the Canadian television series SCTV. The album was produced by Marc Giacomelli for Anthem Records and captures the improvised, conversational style that defined the duo’s on‑screen segments. The material consists of comedic sketches, character monologues, and satirical commentary on Canadian culture, delivered in the unscripted format that became the hallmark of the McKenzie Brothers.

The album includes the track “Take Off,” featuring a guest vocal appearance by Geddy Lee of Rush, which became a notable crossover moment between comedy and rock audiences. Other segments such as “Peter’s Donuts,” “Black Holes,” and “Doug’s Mouth” reflect the show’s blend of observational humor and character‑driven improvisation. The record also includes a comedic version of “Twelve Days of Christmas,” which became one of the duo’s most recognized routines.

Released during the height of the characters’ popularity, the album contributed to the broader cultural impact of the McKenzie Brothers and remains a key artifact of early‑1980s Canadian comedy. Anthem’s production and distribution brought the material to both Canadian and U.S. markets, expanding the reach of the characters beyond television.
