Here's a pressing that doesn't surface nearly as often as it should – Bobby Darin's "18 Yellow Roses" on Canadian Capitol from 1963. This album caught Darin right in the thick of his country phase, when he was consciously moving away from the teen idol image and diving headfirst into Nashville's sound. The title track was his attempt at cracking the country charts, and while it didn't quite achieve the crossover success of his earlier hits, it showcased a different side of his remarkable vocal range. What makes this period fascinating is how Darin was essentially reinventing himself every few years – from rock and roll rebel to sophisticated crooner to country storyteller.
