Description
Tous dans l’même bateau is the 1976 debut album by CANO (Coopérative des Artistes du Nouvel‑Ontario), a collective of Franco‑Ontarian musicians whose work blended folk, rock, classical, and progressive influences. Recorded during the height of the Canadian cultural renaissance of the 1970s, the album reflects the group’s roots in Sudbury’s Théâtre du Nouvel‑Ontario and the broader movement to preserve and promote French‑language culture outside Quebec.
The material is built around compositions by André Paiement, Marcel Aymar, Rachel Paiement, and other members of the collective. The arrangements incorporate acoustic and electric guitars, violin, flute, harmonies, and extended instrumental passages. Tracks such as “En plein hiver” and “Baie Ste‑Marie” highlight the group’s ability to merge traditional folk themes with progressive structures, while pieces like “Les rues d’Ottawa” and “Dimanche après‑midi” reflect the lyrical storytelling central to CANO’s identity.
Produced by Luc Cousineau with assistance from Jon Red Mitchell, the album was released exclusively in Canada on A&M and became a foundational recording in Franco‑Ontarian music. It remains one of the most significant Canadian folk‑rock releases of the 1970s.
