Charles Mingus – Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus – 1964 – Post-Bop / Orchestral Jazz Impulse! A-54 | Vinyl – U.S. Release

Tracklist

Side A II B.S. – I X Love – Celia – Mood Indigo

Side B Better Get Hit in Yo’ Soul – Theme for Lester Young – Hora Decubitus

Released in January 1964, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus is a bold reimagining of Charles Mingus’s earlier compositions, arranged for a larger ensemble and recorded with cinematic intensity. The album features Mingus’s signature blend of blues, gospel, and avant-garde jazz, with powerful horn sections and dynamic shifts in mood and tempo.

“II B.S.” and “Better Get Hit in Yo’ Soul” are explosive, gospel-infused pieces, while “Celia” and “I X Love” showcase Mingus’s lyrical side. “Mood Indigo,” a Duke Ellington classic, is reinterpreted with reverence and Mingus’s own harmonic depth. “Hora Decubitus” closes the album with a driving, big-band energy.

Produced by Bob Thiele and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, the U.S. mono pressing was issued on Impulse!’s iconic orange-and-black label. The cover design by Joe Lebow and photography by Lee Friedlander reflect the album’s bold personality and artistic ambition.

Mingus x5 is a masterclass in reinterpretation, capturing the full range of Mingus’s genius in one of his most accessible and powerful recordings.
