Released in 1964, Mingus Plays Piano is a rare and intimate solo album from bassist and composer Charles Mingus, showcasing his expressive and unconventional approach to the piano. Recorded without overdubs or edits, the album captures Mingus’s spontaneous compositions and improvisations in their rawest form.
The pieces range from romantic ballads like “Body and Soul” to abstract explorations such as “Composite,” revealing Mingus’s deep harmonic imagination and emotional range. “Myself When I Am Real” and “Orange Was the Color…” are standout tracks that blend blues, impressionism, and gospel motifs.
Issued by Impulse! Records in the U.S. on their classic orange-and-black label, the album was produced by Bob Thiele and features liner notes by Nat Hentoff. The cover art, a contemplative portrait of Mingus, reinforces the introspective nature of the recording.
Mingus Plays Piano remains a cult favorite among jazz aficionados, offering a glimpse into the inner world of one of jazz’s most complex and visionary artists.
