Here's a Canadian Epic pressing of Cheap Trick's legendary live album that captured lightning in a bottle during their February 1978 performances at Tokyo's Budokan Hall. While the band had been crafting brilliant power pop for years without significant commercial breakthrough in the States, Japanese audiences immediately understood what Rick Nielsen's songwriting and Robin Zander's soaring vocals were all about. The crowd's absolutely electric response to tracks like "I Want You to Want Me" and "Surrender" translates beautifully on vinyl, and you can practically feel the energy radiating from the grooves. What makes this recording so special is how it perfectly showcases Cheap Trick's ability to merge Beatles-influenced melodies with harder rock sensibilities, all while maintaining an infectious sense of fun that many of their arena rock contemporaries lacked.
