Description Through the Lens was recorded in 1988 during Checkfield’s period of close association with American Gramaphone, the label known for its instrumental and electronic‑based catalog. Checkfield is the duo of John Archer and Ron Satterfield, who began collaborating in the late 1970s and developed a sound built around synthesizers, acoustic instruments, and melodic composition. This album reflects their transition from early independent recordings into fully produced studio work supported by a broader roster of contributing musicians.

The material was composed, arranged, and programmed by Archer and Satterfield, with recording and mixing completed at Studio West and Tuesday/Network Studio in San Diego. The sessions incorporated a combination of electronic textures and live instrumentation, including contributions from Jim Plank on drums and percussion, Mike Spiro on Latin percussion, Bob Magnusson on acoustic bass, Pat Kelley on electric guitar, Darol Anger on violin, and John Reevess on saxophone and flute. The album was engineered by Archer, with co‑production and mixing by Dan Abernathy and Satterfield.

The compositions reflect the duo’s focus on structured instrumental themes, integrating synthesizer programming with acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and ensemble arrangements. The album was mastered at Disc Mastering in Nashville and published by American Gramaphone (BMI).
