From his obituary
Cye was best known as a fiddler. From his early start at age five on a fiddle his uncle Reeves made from a cigar box all the way to winning five Maritime Old Time Fiddling Contests. He also made numerous television and radio appearances including “Don Messer’s Jubilee”, “Gazette”, “Countrytime”, “Cross Canada Jamboree”, “Up Home Tonight” and his own local cable program “Studio Party”. He played on CKCL radio from its opening in 1947 through until the 1970’s. Cye started playing for local dances at age eight and went on to play in a number of bands over the years including his own “Stealaway” and 16 years with the CNRA Quintet. More than anything he will be remembered for the endless number of dances and benefits that he played in his lifetime. He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Not just a fiddler, Cye wrote over 35 fiddle tunes including: Cye Steele’s Breakdown, Mitch’s Jig, The Misti Dawn Waltz, The Tracey Lynn Waltz and the toe tapping, finger flying, bow burning Up Jumped Fred
