Cyndi Lauper's debut studio album, released in 1983 on Portrait Records, introduced her as a distinctive voice in '80s pop with a sound built around new wave, synth-pop, and rock influences. The album produced several well-known singles including "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time," and "She Bop," all of which received heavy radio and MTV airplay throughout the mid-'80s. Lauper co-wrote much of the material and brought an eclectic, genre-blending energy that set her apart from much of the mainstream pop of the era.
