David Lee Roth's 1985 debut solo EP, released while he was still technically a member of Van Halen, marked his first steps outside the band with a deliberately playful, pop-leaning sound far removed from hard rock. The four-track release leans heavily on covers and novelty, most notably a campy rendition of "California Girls" and a lounge-tinged take on "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody," both of which became MTV staples and charted well. It's a short but revealing snapshot of Roth's showman personality and his taste for kitsch and classic pop over straight-ahead rock.
