David Rudder is a Trinidad-born calypsonian who rose to prominence in the mid-1980s, and Haiti is his 1988 studio album recorded with his backing band Charlie's Roots. The album blends soca and calypso with touches of reggae and Afro-Caribbean rhythm, and the title track "Haiti" became one of Rudder's signature songs, a moving tribute to the Haitian people rooted in pan-Caribbean solidarity. The Canadian pressing was released on Sire Records, bringing Rudder's music to a wider North American audience.
