Deep Purple's 1972 album Machine Head is one of the defining records of hard rock, recorded by the classic Mark II lineup of Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Glover, and Paice. The album was famously recorded in Montreux, Switzerland using the Rolling Stones' mobile studio, an experience that directly inspired "Smoke on the Water," which features one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock history. "Highway Star" is another standout, opening the record with a relentless drive that became a template for hard rock and heavy metal to follow.
