Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 99, recorded here with David Oistrakh as soloist, Maxim Shostakovich conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra, and released on Angel Records in 1973. The concerto was composed in 1948 but suppressed during the Stalinist era, not receiving its premiere until 1956. It is a major work of 20th-century orchestral repertoire in four movements, notable for its dark, brooding character and the demanding virtuosity required of the soloist.
