Here's a piece of Canadian new wave history that doesn't surface in collections nearly often enough. Doug Bennett and his Vancouver-based Slugs crafted something genuinely special with "Cognac and Bologna," their debut full-length that perfectly captured the quirky, horn-driven sound that made them darlings of the Canadian club circuit. This original Canadian Ritdong pressing represents the band at their most adventurous, blending ska-tinged rhythms with Bennett's theatrical vocals and the kind of melodic sophistication that separated them from their punk contemporaries. The album spawned their signature track "Too Bad," which became a staple on Canadian radio and helped establish the template for what intelligent new wave could sound like north of the border.
