Here's a piece of literary history that belongs in every serious collector's library. Dylan Thomas's "Reading Volume 1" on Caedmon Records captures one of the 20th century's most distinctive poetic voices in his element. This was recorded during Thomas's legendary American reading tours in the early 1950s, just years before his tragic death in New York at age 39. Caedmon, founded in 1952, was pioneering the concept of spoken word recordings when most labels wouldn't touch poetry, and Thomas was among their earliest and most important artists. His Welsh lilt and theatrical delivery transformed poems like "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" and selections from "Under Milk Wood" into something approaching performance art.
