Side A Fire Waltz – Bee Vamp

Side B The Prophet

Released on 1 July 1961, At the Five Spot, Vol. 1 captures Eric Dolphy’s legendary live performance at the Five Spot Café in New York City, a hub for avant-garde jazz in the early ’60s. The recording features a powerhouse quintet: Eric Dolphy (alto sax, bass clarinet), Booker Little (trumpet), Mal Waldron (piano), Richard Davis (bass), and Ed Blackwell (drums).

“Fire Waltz,” composed by Waldron, opens the set with a haunting melody and fiery solos, while “Bee Vamp” showcases Booker Little’s lyrical trumpet work. Side B’s “The Prophet,” a Dolphy original, stretches into exploratory territory, blending structured themes with free improvisation.

Produced by Alan Douglas and engineered by Bill Schwartau, the album is a vivid snapshot of Dolphy’s fearless artistry and the synergy of his ensemble. The Five Spot recordings are revered for their raw energy, emotional depth, and historical significance in the evolution of modern jazz.
