Released in November 1982, Hello, I Must Be Going! was Phil Collins’ second solo album, following the success of Face Value. The album reflected Collins’ emotional state following his divorce, with darker lyrical themes and a more aggressive tone on tracks like “I Don’t Care Anymore” and “Do You Know, Do You Care.” Despite its introspective content, the album also featured upbeat moments, most notably the Motown-inspired cover of “You Can’t Hurry Love,” which became a No. 1 hit in the UK.

The album was co-produced with Hugh Padgham, whose gated reverb drum sound became a Collins signature. “Thru These Walls” and “The West Side” showcased Collins’ interest in atmospheric textures and instrumental storytelling, while “Don’t Let Him Steal Your Heart Away” offered a tender piano ballad in contrast to the album’s more confrontational tracks.

Hello, I Must Be Going! peaked at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and helped solidify Collins’ solo career apart from Genesis. Its blend of emotional depth and pop craftsmanship made it a defining release of early ’80s adult contemporary rock.
