Gordon Lightfoot's third studio album, released in 1968 on United Artists Records, finds the Canadian singer-songwriter working in his characteristic blend of folk and acoustic pop, with some light orchestral arrangements added to the mix. Recorded during a particularly productive stretch of his career, the album includes "Black Day in July," a song addressing the 1967 Detroit riots that received considerable attention at the time. The record also features "Wherefore and Why" and the title track, showcasing Lightfoot's clean fingerpicking style and the plain, narrative songwriting that defined his early work.
