In the Dark was recorded in 1987 and marked the Grateful Dead’s return to studio work after a six‑year gap following Go to Heaven. Rather than building the album through traditional studio tracking, the band developed the material by recording live performances inside the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium without an audience present. This approach allowed the group to capture the interplay and dynamics of their stage sound while maintaining studio control. The recordings were then refined and mixed under the direction of Jerry Garcia and engineer John Cutler.

The album features songwriting contributions from the band’s core writing partnerships: Garcia and Robert Hunter, Bob Weir and John Barlow, and Brent Mydland. “Touch of Grey” became the band’s first Top 10 single and introduced their music to a broader audience during the late 1980s. “Throwing Stones” and “Black Muddy River” became regular parts of the band’s live repertoire, reflecting the group’s thematic focus on social commentary and personal reflection during this period.

The album documents the band’s late‑era lineup, including Garcia, Weir, Lesh, Hart, Kreutzmann, and Mydland. The material reflects the group’s shift toward more structured songwriting while retaining improvisational elements. In the Dark played a significant role in the band’s resurgence during the 1980s, leading to renewed commercial visibility and extensive touring.
