Description The Many Moods of Belafonte was recorded during a period when Harry Belafonte was expanding his repertoire beyond the calypso material that had defined his early commercial success. By the early 1960s, Belafonte had become a central figure in American folk music, international song traditions, and socially conscious performance. This album reflects that shift, presenting material drawn from Caribbean sources, South African repertoire, Israeli folk traditions, Broadway compositions, and American folk ballads.
The project was produced by Bob Bollard, who worked extensively with Belafonte throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s. Arrangements and conducting were handled by Howard A. Roberts, whose work helped integrate orchestral elements with Belafonte’s established folk and calypso influences. The album includes “Bamotsweri,” connected to the South African repertoire associated with Miriam Makeba, and “Lyla, Lyla,” an Israeli composition. “Zombie Jamboree” appears here in a newly arranged version of a calypso standard Belafonte had performed in earlier years. “Try to Remember,” from The Fantasticks, is one of the earliest recorded interpretations of the song by a major vocalist. “Dark as a Dungeon,” written by Merle Travis, reflects Belafonte’s interest in American labor songs and traditional folk material.
The album was recorded during the same era as Belafonte’s major concert releases and international collaborations, documenting his movement toward a broader, globally influenced repertoire. All writing, publishing, and production credits follow the information printed on the labels and jacket.
