Herb Alpert's *Rise* came out in 1979 on A&M Records, marking a significant departure from his earlier Tijuana Brass sound into slick jazz-funk and smooth soul territory. The title track "Rise" became a massive hit, reaching number one on the pop charts and later sampled by Notorious B.I.G. on "Hypnotize." The album reflects the late-70s fusion of disco, funk, and instrumental jazz that was popular at the time, with Alpert's trumpet front and center throughout.
