Comments Released on 3 September 1984, Powerslave is Iron Maiden’s fifth studio album and a defining entry in their catalog. The record is notable for its Ancient Egyptian theme, reflected in both the title track and the iconic cover art, which features their mascot Eddie as a pharaoh.
The album opens with “Aces High,” a high-octane tribute to WWII fighter pilots, followed by “2 Minutes to Midnight,” a politically charged anthem that became one of the band’s most enduring singles. The second side features the epic “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” a 13-minute adaptation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, showcasing Iron Maiden’s progressive ambitions and literary influences.
Produced by Martin Birch and recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, Powerslave was a commercial and critical success. It supported the band’s massive World Slavery Tour, one of the longest and most elaborate tours in rock history, which later spawned the live album Live After Death.
With its blend of speed, melody, and conceptual depth, Powerslave helped solidify Iron Maiden’s reputation as pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and remains a fan favorite for its ambitious scope and powerful execution.
