Description
It’s a Beautiful Day…Today was released in 1973 as a transitional album issued under the It’s a Beautiful Day name, but featuring an entirely different lineup from the group’s original San Francisco psychedelic era. By this point, the band name was being used for a new ensemble led by Fred Webb and Tom Fowler, shifting the sound away from the violin‑driven psychedelic style of the late 1960s and toward blues‑rock, country‑rock, and early ’70s singer‑songwriter influences.
The material is built around original compositions by Webb, Fowler, and bassist Bud Cockrell, with arrangements emphasizing electric piano, guitar, and vocal harmonies. Tracks such as “Ain’t That Lovin’ You Baby,” “Ridin’ Thumb,” and “Creator” reflect the album’s blend of blues‑based rock and Southern‑tinged grooves. Columbia’s Canadian pressing mirrors the U.S. issue but carries domestic manufacturing credits and label variations specific to Columbia Records of Canada.
Although stylistically distinct from the band’s earlier work, the album stands as a document of the group’s later period and the shifting musical landscape of early‑1970s rock.
