Description

Burning represents one of Jim Byrnes’ earliest full‑length releases, issued during the mid‑1980s when he was establishing himself as a blues vocalist and guitarist with a distinctive mix of St. Louis roots and West Coast influences. Before his later Juno‑winning period and his long association with Canadian blues labels, Byrnes recorded a series of independent and small‑label projects that showcased his gravel‑toned vocals, narrative songwriting, and hybrid approach to blues, R&B, and rock.

The album reflects Byrnes’ early stylistic identity: emotionally direct vocals, guitar‑driven arrangements, and material shaped by his background performing in clubs across the U.S. and Canada. The production is characteristic of independent 1980s blues releases — warm, unpolished, and centered on live‑band energy rather than studio embellishment. Burning stands as an important document of Byrnes’ formative years, predating the broader recognition he would receive in the 1990s and 2000s.
