Here's a fascinating piece of Maritime folk history that doesn't surface very often. John MacDonald Brown's "Live At The Herring Choker" captures one of Cape Breton's most authentic traditional singers in his element, recorded at what was likely a small venue somewhere in the island's Celtic heartland. Brown was part of that generation of Cape Breton musicians who maintained the old Gaelic singing traditions while also embracing the broader Celtic revival of the folk era. His repertoire drew heavily from the Scottish settlers' ballad tradition, mixed with songs that had evolved uniquely in the Maritime provinces over generations of fishing communities and rural life.
