Johnnie Ray's self-titled 1962 LP on Liberty captures the American pop singer at a mid-career point, offering a mix of ballads and uptempo numbers that reflect his dramatic, emotionally charged vocal style. Ray had been a major force in early 1950s pop, known for his raw, crying delivery on hits like "Cry" and "The Little White Cloud That Cried," which helped bridge the gap between traditional pop and the emotional intensity that would define rock and roll. This record leans into his strengths as a vocalist across a range of material touching on pop, soul-influenced balladry, and light rock and roll sensibilities.
