Here's a pressing that doesn't surface nearly as often as it should – the original 1975 Warner Bros. release of Kate and Anna McGarrigle's stunning debut. These Montreal sisters arrived on the scene with an album that perfectly captured the mid-70s intersection of folk tradition and contemporary songcraft, creating something that felt both timeless and utterly fresh. What makes this record particularly compelling is how it showcases their bilingual approach, weaving together French-Canadian folk elements with American roots music in a way that influenced everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Emmylou Harris. The harmonies alone are worth the price of admission, but it's the songwriting – Anna's "Heart Like a Wheel" became a signature tune for Ronstadt – that really sets this apart from the folk revival pack.
This original Warner pressing captures the intimate, almost parlor-room quality of their sound in a way that later reissues never quite matched. The production, handled by Greg Prestopino, has that perfect 70s warmth without the over-polished sheen that would creep into folk records later in the decade. For collectors of Canadian music or anyone serious about the folk-rock continuum, this debut represents a crucial link between the Laurel Canyon sound and the northern folk traditions that were just starting to gain recognition south of the border. The McGarrigles were doing the roots music thing before it had a name, and this pressing documents that moment when two voices and a handful of instruments could still stop the world.
