King Curtis was a Texas-born tenor saxophonist who became one of the most in-demand session players and bandleaders in soul and R&B during the 1960s. This 1968 Atco compilation draws together some of his strongest instrumental work, showcasing his gritty, blues-inflected saxophone style that straddled soul, funk, and early rock and roll. Tracks like "Soul Twist" and "Memphis Soul Stew" give a good sense of his range, from dancefloor-ready grooves to slow-burning blues.
