La Roche Bleue: Best of Sylviane Cedia CD

The Afro-Caribbean musical traditions of French Guyana are incorporated into the dance-inspiring music of Cayenne-born and Paris-based singer, songwriter and guitarist, Sylviane Cedia. Although she initially blended a variety of styles, including compas, reggae, mazurka, fox trot, carnaval, soca and cadence, she has increasingly focused on the Zouk tradition. A former lead singer for the Guianese folk ballet troupe, Oyampis, Cedia has found even greater success as a soloist. Her album, Bab'leve -I'm Feeling Blues, reached the top of the world music charts and became an international hit in 1986. Playing guitar and singing from the age of nine, Cedia made her debut at a traditional music festival in St. Lawrence de Marconi. Her career was further promoted after she won a prestigious songwriting contest in Cayenne. After several tours with Oyampis, Cedia left to embark on a solo career. Releasing her debut solo album, in 1974, she embarked on a European tour with women from France, the Netherlands and England. Her first visit to Paris had a profound effect. Falling in love with the French city, she became determined to make Paris her home. Although she already held a Bachelors degree in technology, she applied successfully to study at the Conservatoire de la Chanson de Mireille in Paris. Since moving to Paris, Cedia has remained active as a musician. In addition recording nine impressive albums, and one compilation, she has performed with her band in Louisiana, Montreal, the Ivory Coast, Egypt, Dakar and Nigeria.
