Lorenz Albert Van DeLinder III was better known by his stage name, Larry Coryell—a groundbreaking American jazz guitarist often hailed as “the godfather of fusion.” Born on April 2, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, Coryell helped pioneer the jazz-rock fusion movement in the 1960s and 70s.
He was known for blending jazz with rock, blues, and even classical influences, creating a bold, electrified sound that pushed genre boundaries. Over his career, he collaborated with legends like John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, and Miles Davis, and led influential groups such as The Eleventh House.
Coryell passed away in 2017, but his legacy lives on in the countless guitarists and fusion artists he inspired.
