Here's a Canadian Motown pressing of Michael Masser's "The Original Soundtrack Of Mahogany" from 1975, a soundtrack that represents one of the more sophisticated entries in Motown's catalog during their mid-70s transition period. Masser, who had already established himself as a formidable composer and producer through his work with Diana Ross on "Touch Me in the Morning," was given the reins to craft the musical landscape for this ambitious Berry Gordy-directed film. The result is a lush, orchestrated affair that bridges the gap between classic Motown soul and the emerging disco movement, anchored by what would become one of Diana Ross's signature ballads, "Do You Know Where You're Going To (Theme from Mahogany)."

What makes this Canadian pressing particularly noteworthy is its place in Motown's international distribution strategy during a pivotal moment when the label was expanding beyond its Detroit roots and experimenting with more cinematic, adult-contemporary sounds. The soundtrack showcases Masser's classical training and his ability to weave together funk, soul, and orchestral pop in ways that influenced countless R&B producers throughout the late 70s and early 80s. While Diana Ross gets top billing on the album's key tracks, this is very much Masser's show as composer and arranger, and collectors of sophisticated 70s soul and soundtrack material will appreciate the album's ambitious scope and the way it captures Motown's evolution during one of its most creatively restless periods.
