Mike Oldfield's debut album, released on Virgin Records in 1973, is a largely instrumental progressive rock record built around two extended side-long compositions featuring Oldfield playing most of the instruments himself, including guitars, bass, piano, and the distinctive tubular bells that open the record. The opening theme became widely known after its use in the 1973 film The Exorcist. The music blends elements of folk, classical, and rock in a way that was fairly unique for its time and helped launch the Virgin label.
