Tracklist
Side A Well You Needn’t – Fran-Dance – So What
Side B Oleo – If I Were a Bell – Neo
Recorded live on April 22, 1961, Saturday Night at the Blackhawk, Volume II captures Miles Davis and his quintet in peak form at the legendary Blackhawk nightclub in San Francisco. The lineup features Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums)—a rhythm section known for its tight interplay and swing.
The performances are intimate yet electrifying, with extended solos and dynamic group chemistry. “So What” and “Fran-Dance” showcase Davis’s lyrical phrasing, while “Oleo” and “Neo” push into more exploratory territory. The recording preserves the club’s ambiance, offering a front-row seat to one of the finest live jazz sessions of the era.
Produced by Teo Macero, the U.S. stereo pressing features Columbia’s red “Fidelity” label and is part of a two-volume set that remains essential listening for fans of live jazz.
