Odetta's 1959 Vanguard release My Eyes Have Seen captures the powerful contralto voice of one of the defining figures of the American folk revival, drawing from blues, spirituals, and traditional folk material. The album showcases her characteristic spare arrangements, often built around her own acoustic guitar accompaniment, which became the template for how many listeners understood the connection between Black American musical traditions and the broader folk movement of the era.
