Description It All Comes Back was released in 1973 during Paul Butterfield’s post‑Blues Band period, when he formed Better Days as a vehicle for a more roots‑oriented blend of blues, R&B, and Americana. The group included Geoff Muldaur, Amos Garrett, Ronnie Barron, Billy Rich, and Christopher Parker, musicians whose backgrounds spanned folk‑blues, New Orleans R&B, and early country‑rock. This lineup allowed Butterfield to move away from the electric Chicago‑blues sound of his 1960s work and toward a more ensemble‑driven approach.
The album was produced by Butterfield, Muldaur, and Nick Jameson, with Jameson also handling engineering. The material includes compositions by Bobby Charles, Mose Allison, Ronnie Barron, and Butterfield himself, reflecting the group’s interest in mixing traditional blues structures with contemporary songwriting. Tracks such as “Small Town Talk” and “Win or Lose” highlight the collaboration between Butterfield and Charles, while “If You Live” connects the album to the jazz‑blues writing of Mose Allison. The title track, written by Charles, became one of the defining pieces of the Better Days era.
Recorded during a period of stylistic transition for Butterfield, the album captures his shift toward a more relaxed, groove‑based sound supported by a multi‑instrumental ensemble. Better Days emphasized vocal harmonies, acoustic textures, and New Orleans‑influenced arrangements, marking a distinct chapter in Butterfield’s career following the dissolution of the original Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
