Description

Hard Times was released in 1975 as Peter Yarrow’s first solo album following the final chapter of Peter, Paul and Mary’s original run. Recorded with the Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section and co‑produced by Barry Beckett, the album blends traditional folk themes with Southern soul textures, reflecting Yarrow’s interest in social commentary and musical storytelling.

The program includes reinterpretations of Depression‑era standards (“Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime”), Jamaican roots (“Sitting in Limbo”), and original compositions that explore hardship, resilience, and personal reflection. Yarrow’s arrangements are sparse but emotionally direct, with acoustic guitar, piano, and rhythm section support. Tracks such as “Beans, Bacon and Gravy” and “Break the Polished Glass” showcase his lyrical style, while “Carry Me” and “Another Chain Unbound” reflect his post‑’60s spiritual and political sensibilities.

Issued on Warner Bros. with the iconic Burbank palm‑tree label, the LP stands as a transitional work in Yarrow’s career, bridging folk revival legacy with mid‑’70s singer‑songwriter introspection.
