Pink Floyd's ninth studio album, released in 1975, is a progressive rock record built largely as a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett and an exploration of themes around absence, alienation, and the music industry. The album is anchored by the nine-part suite "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," which opens and closes the record, with "Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar" filling out the middle. It followed the massive commercial success of "The Dark Side of the Moon" and continued the band's signature blend of extended compositions, atmospheric textures, and David Gilmour's distinctive guitar work.
