Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic's 1979 Deutsche Grammophon recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, known as the "Little Russian" for its incorporation of Ukrainian folk melodies. Written in 1872, it was one of Tchaikovsky's earlier symphonic works and remains among the more lighthearted and folk-inflected pieces in his orchestral output. The finale, built on the Ukrainian folk song "The Crane," is the symphony's most recognizable movement.
