Released in 1981, As Far As Siam is the second studio album by Canadian rock band Red Rider, fronted by Tom Cochrane. This Canadian pressing features the enduring hit “Lunatic Fringe,” a track that became a staple of rock radio and was later featured in films and television, including Vision Quest and Miami Vice.
The album blends atmospheric rock with sharp lyrical commentary, showcasing Cochrane’s introspective songwriting and the band’s dynamic arrangements. Tracks like “Ships” and “Caught in the Middle” explore themes of isolation and resilience, while “Cowboys in Hong Kong” adds a cinematic flair to the band’s sound.
Produced by Richard Landis and Michael James Jackson, As Far As Siam helped solidify Red Rider’s place in the Canadian rock canon. Its polished production and emotional depth marked a leap forward from their debut, setting the stage for Cochrane’s later solo success.
