Here's a pressing that belongs in any serious classical collection – Reiner's legendary interpretation of Strauss's "Ein Heldenleben" with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on RCA. While this particular 1981 US pressing comes from RCA's later catalog, it stems from Fritz Reiner's groundbreaking stereo recordings made during his transformative tenure with the CSO in the late 1950s. Reiner, who had actually worked with Strauss himself, brought an authenticity and dramatic intensity to this tone poem that few conductors have matched. His reading captures both the heroic swagger and intimate poetry of Strauss's autobiographical masterpiece, with the Chicago brass section delivering some of the most thrilling playing ever committed to vinyl.
