Rita MacNeil's debut album, released in 1975 on Boot Records, finds the Cape Breton singer-songwriter in early form, performing original folk material rooted in her Maritime upbringing. The record has a quiet, acoustic intimacy to it, with MacNeil's distinctive voice carrying songs that touch on themes of womanhood, identity, and resilience, years before she became a household name in Canada. It predates her mainstream breakthrough by over a decade and represents a more stripped-down side of her work compared to the polished country and Celtic-influenced recordings she would later be known for.
