Rough Trade - Avoid Freud - True North TN 43 1980 Lp

This Canadian pressing was released in 1980 on True North Records. Avoid Freud was recorded at Manta Sound in Toronto and produced by Gene Martynec, who had previously worked with the band on their early recordings. The album captures Rough Trade’s blend of new wave, art‑rock, and cabaret‑influenced performance, built around Carole Pope’s vocal style and Kevin Staples’ arrangements. “High School Confidential,” one of the band’s most widely recognized songs, received significant airplay in Canada and is noted for its openly queer lyrical content, which was uncommon in mainstream Canadian rock at the time. The album reflects the group’s Toronto‑based scene and their association with the independent Canadian music movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
