Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas Nos. 7 and 9, performed here by Soviet pianist Sviatoslav Richter, are among the composer's most significant works in the genre. The Seventh Sonata, sometimes called the "Stalingrad" sonata, is particularly well known, with its driving, percussive final movement a staple of the modern classical piano repertoire. Richter, widely regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of Prokofiev's piano music, recorded these works for the Soviet Melodia label, later distributed in France through Le Chant Du Monde.
